Kim Sandstrom Peterson C’76 recalls that her decision to choose North Park University and major in nursing made her parents both excited and proud. Kim and her brother Brent say their late parents, David and Marion, were earnest and sincere people who valued higher education and were “Covenant to the core.”

The Sandstroms’ early interest in North Park culminated nearly 50 years later in 2021 with their estate gift to support Promise Scholarships and to endow the David P. and Marion D. Sandstrom Promise Scholarship Fund. “My parents would be so pleased that Promise Scholarships benefit high academic-achieving applicants who represent the Evangelical Covenant Church and/or plan to major in STEM-related fields,” said Kim.

David, who was a printer, and Marion, a nurse, were careful savers and wise investors. Their methodical planning allowed them to live a good life and to now benefit North Park through an endowed scholarship fund. David died in 2002 and Marion in 2020.

“My parents were of modest means, and they would never have sought any sort of attention,” Kim shared. “That said, I firmly believe that no matter your financial means, we each have a role in continuing to live Christ’s love in our world. I am thankful for the Christian values and wonderful profession my parents made possible for me at North Park.”

Donors who are interested in making estate gifts to North Park University are invited to work with our Advancement team to fulfill their philanthropic goals. Donors who notify North Park of their intentions to make a planned gift become members of the Heritage Circle, with benefits including special communications and events.
